SXSW Recap: The Best, The Worst & Everything In Between

Performances I Didn’t Expect To Like, But Loved:Dreezy - The Chicagoan’s name had been brought up to my attention before, but nothing I heard from her really sparked my interest. After watching her perform live at the Hip Hop, Bop & Drill Showcase, I had to check out her latest ‘tape and she has now a new fan solely off a strong performance at South By. She rapped with ferocity and was fearless while rocking 6-7 songs.

Dreezy – Schizophrenia

Chris Brown’s Girlfriend Attends Charity Event in                                   Chicago

Model and girlfriend of Chris Brown, Karreuche, was recently in Chicago for a surprise visit to support the #HashTagLunchBag charity event. Chicago Bop King Lil Kemo and rapper Dreezy, partnered together to make this event a success, which was held at Fashionable Addictions.Volunteers came out to assemble lunch bags, which were distributed to a women’s shelter and the homeless. Karreuche even purchased gloves to go inside the lunch bags as well and also left encouraging handwritten messages on a few lunch bags.#HashTagLunchBag is a movement dedicated to utilizing social media to bring awareness & eliminate hunger needs in local communities.

VIDEO : Dreezy f. Lil Herb, Zmoney, and KD Young                                        Cocky, “Ain’t For None” Remix

One of my favorite things about recent Chicago rap is the lack of a set-in-stone gender binary for blustery, tough-talking raps. Rapper/singer double threat Dreezy continues this tradition on the official remix of her song “Ain’t For None.” (The original version featured King L and appeared on her August mixtape, DSM.) She’s recruited some of Chicago’s most promising 2013 rookies—Lil Herb, KD Young Cocky and FADER rapper to watch Zmoney—but she outshines them all, seething and flexing over D. Brooks’ production.
